6.2 Design Process

6.2 Design Process
Mind map

Figure 17: Mindmap
A mind map was drawn to list out the potential sources of inspiration to start sketching the magazine layouts and incorporate them with fanzine graphic styles.

Sketchbook 1
Sketches were done from references such as books, CD covers, fanzines and the internet. The sketches were divided into four sections; cut and paste masthead, cut and paste layout, hand-lettering masthead and hand-lettering layout. These sketches gave the designer a rough outline on how to redesign the magazine.

Journal

After the first sketchbook, the researcher did more research and took notes from various sources such as books and the internet about fanzine background, looks and styles to capture the attitude to inject them into the redesigning of ROTTW music magazine. Most of the fanzines have no rules to be followed and the publishers have freedom to express themselves.

Sketchbook 2
Collage technique was used for the second stage of sketches. The original magazines were photocopied. The images and texts were cut and pasted to create new layouts for the magazine covers and inner pages layout.

Sketchbook 3
Some more sketches were done in the final sketchbook before doing the final artworks. These sets of sketches are finer compared to the first and second sketchbook. These sketches were used to design the final artwork.
