Music
publications and music events are strongly inter-connected with each other.
This is proven with the creation of Sniffin’
Glue fanzine by Mark Perry in 1976 after witnessing a live performance by The
Ramones. He wanted to read a magazine about the music he witnessed but had to
make it himself because there were no punk music magazines at that time.
Many
homegrown fanzines were made during the peak of stadium rock concerts in
1980’s. This shows that rock concert goers wanted to read about the music and
performers and the fanzine were made to serve the demand.
This
is also supported by the case study I did with Mohd Rom Mohd Nor who stated Rock The World concert series has been
promoting the concert series through ROTTW magazine since its first year and
ROTTW is their official magazine since then. This shows the strong connection
between music magazines and music events goers.
In
this study, the respondents consist of 58 music event goers that are based in
Klang Valley. Klang Valley is an urban area with a 7.2 million population and
the fastest growing region in Malaysia in terms of population and economy.
This
group of people was chosen because it is said by Mohd Rom Mohd Nor that music
lovers from urban areas are the ones that are converting to the internet now
while the people from suburban areas are following suit.
The
respondents at concerts and other music related events around Klang Valley were
chosen for random sampling. The researcher aimed to get readers from different
backgrounds, musical tastes, standard of education and graphic design literacy.
This is in order to make observations of music readers with all kinds of
preference.
