This
research is based on the framework by Paul Williams who did the first rock
music fanzine, Crawdaddy! which was
done independently at Swarthmore College in 1966. He used cut and paste
technique to do the layout. He then duplicated the fanzine using mimeograph
machine and independently distributed the fanzine of rock music criticism which
he mostly wrote himself.
This
research is also based on the work of Mark Perry, a bank clerk who
self-published 14 issues of Sniffin’ Glue
fanzine after finding no magazines about punk music in the market. The first
issue was done using a children’s typewriter, and using cut and paste
technique. The headlines and titles were hand-written using black marker pen.
The master copy was later duplicated using photocopy machines and distributed to
record stores. It was the first punk fanzine in the UK.
Based
on the framework of these two fanzines and other fanzines that was written in
the literature review sources, the researcher had carried out the interviews
and survey to get the preference of music magazine readers to design an
alternative look for music magazines.
The
graphic styles that the researcher listed out to consider in this research are;
¨ Cut-and-paste
look
¨ Ransom
Notes look
¨ Typewriter
lettering
¨ Hand-lettering
¨ Stencil
Art
¨ Silk-screen
look
¨ Binding
and format exploration.
¨ Cover
mounts (for example calendars and posters)
The
researcher used Microsoft Excel software to get the descriptive statistics. The
result was analyzed and sketches were done to draft the design ideas for the
magazine that incorporates fanzine graphics styles.
