2.3 PUBLICATION

A publication is published information, regardless of the format. A publication is produced in multiple copies for public or widespread distribution. http://www-wsl.state.wy.us/sis/wydocs/definition.html, 2011

We are surrounded by publications wherever we go because communication is so important in today’s society. Six elements that will affect the finished design of publications are; format, grid, typography, color, cover or masthead and images. Browsing and reading a special-interest publication enables people to connect with like-minded individuals, whether they live nearby or faraway. Publication designers have a limitation of format because of size, shape, and of course, cost and they should use their creativity to overcome them. In 1439, a German metal-worker Johannes Gutenberg invented a system enabling rapid printing using metal letter press that is reusable. Publications were spread and made available throughout the world then. Technology advancements like home computer and the internet helped design and production of publication in many ways over the last 20 years. Working with print enables designers to use different paper stocks, typography and styles of imagery that is tactile, expressive and familiar. The internet helped a lot. The arrival of digital photography also cuts a lot of costs. Budget plays an important part and will affect the designer’s decision-making process. Limited space and choice can be overcome with individuals’ creativity. Bhaskaran, 2006

Publication design has been constantly evolving in format, typography and texture, copy and color and even the media. It is influenced by cultural climate, business demands, industry peculiarities, technological tools, target audiences, budgetary considerations, and individual design sensibilities. Designers who know conventional design rules will reinvent the design in unique and groundbreaking ways. The diverse and open nature of the publication gives designers exciting options. The wide variation of publication styles is a good thing. Publications tell stories through pictures and words. Good and memorable publication design will not only communicate ideas, it demonstrates the design sensibilities that allow form and content to blend in inventive and unforeseen ways.
